Concacaf Champions League Adopts Direct Elimination Knockout Format
Expanded Tournament Format Announced
Expanded Tournament to Begin in 2024
The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) has announced a new and expanded format for the Concacaf Champions League, beginning in 2024. The tournament will continue to be played in a direct elimination knockout stage format, with the addition of a new group stage.
The expanded tournament will feature 50 clubs, up from the current 16. The clubs will be divided into two groups of 25, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and final will be played in a single-elimination format.
The new format is designed to provide more opportunities for clubs from across the region to compete in the tournament. It will also increase the number of matches played, which will provide more revenue for Concacaf and the clubs.
"We are excited to announce this new format for the Concacaf Champions League," said Concacaf President Victor Montagliani. "This format will provide more opportunities for clubs from across the region to compete in the tournament and will also increase the number of matches played, which will provide more revenue for Concacaf and the clubs."
The first edition of the expanded Concacaf Champions League will be played in 2024. The tournament will be open to clubs from all 41 Concacaf member associations.
